France's government and state railway have been ordered to pay compensation for deporting Jews during World War II.The case was brought by people whose relatives were taken by train to a transit camp at Drancy near Paris during the Nazi occupation of France.

More than 75,000 French Jews were transported from the camp to death camps in Germany. A court in Toulouse found the French state and the rail firm SNCF had been complicit in crimes against humanity.

Call to Muslims over police help

An activist from the Respect Party has urged Muslims in east London to stop co-operating with police.

Yvonne Ridley, who became a Muslim after her kidnap by the Taleban in Afghanistan five years ago, has accused the police of being heavy-handed.She told a meeting of the Newham branch of the Respect Party that Muslims should "boycott" the Met Police.

The Union of Islamic Courts does not want to impose a Taleban-style Islamic state in Somalia, says their leader.

Cambodia temple 'faces collapse'

One of the world's leading conservation experts has warned that more funds are needed to conserve the Angkor temples in Cambodia.

John Stubbs, of the World Monuments Fund (WMF), said one major temple, Phnom Bakheng, is at risk of collapse because of rapidly increasing visitor numbers.

Experts from around the world are meeting in the Cambodian town of Siem Reap to discuss the preservation of the ancient structures.

The Muslim Council of Britain (MCB) has elected Dr Muhammad Abdul Bari as its new general secretary at its annual meeting in London.He was chosen from a field of 37 candidates to succeed Sir Iqbal Sacranie, the post holder since 2002.

Mr Bari, a 52-year-old Bangladeshi, is a specialist teacher in behaviour support for Tower Hamlets Council.A central working committee will also be elected, as well as deputy general secretary and treasurer, for 2006-08.
